Today, Ford Motor Company is all about the EcoBoost technology, ranging from diminutive 3-cylinders sold in Europe to performance oriented V6s available in North America. As of today, Lincoln also uses that terminology for its 3.5 liter V6 available in the full-size MKS sedan and MKT crossover.
But it wasn’t always supposed to be that way.
2007 MKR Concept
When the technology was first introduced on the stunning MKR Concept at the 2007 Detroit Auto Show, it was called TwinForce, to underline the use of two turbos in addition to direct injection. With 415hp and 400 lb.ft of torque, it gave the brute four door coupe enough grunt to rival with its competitors’ V8. Which was a problem.
Showcased in a thoroughly American concept and with such a brash name, which could or could not have found its way into the main line of Ford products, TwinForce was a little bringing too much attention on power and not enough on economy. So, when the engine returned for its second appearance in the slick MKT Concept it was called EcoBoost.
It was certainly a good call on the part of FoMoCo, as EcoBoost turned out to be a big part of the “new”, post-crisis Ford’s portfolio. It showed the company’s commitment turning its engine development around to focus on efficiency, technology and downsizing and it’s now a household name on the market.
Still! One can only imagine the impact a dedicated TwinForce nameplate would have had for Lincoln. Indeed, back in the days, the Ford Modular Engine was offered in Lincolns in DOHC form under the InTech name, and helped assert the brand’s image and the very idea of a hot-rod Lincoln.
